The Wright Thing
John Wright Band did it again. They gave a great concert in Haslev Vise Vers Klub last night. To me, hearing John Wright sing, has always been like eating 70% quality chocolate. Now the chocolate comes in 24 carat gold wrapping, with the three talented musicians he has with him now, namely Maartin Alcock on guitars and bass, Chris Parkinson on piano and accordeon, and Joe Wright on guitar and fiddle. When you buy a CD you expect that the music and singing together form a synthesis. When this also happens on a small club stage - then it's magic, and an experience you can think back on for a long time. E.g. on "Chisel Hill" the J.W.Band did this. Wow!
I admire and am inspired by John's ability to reach his public from the stage. We all become his family for a few hours, as he "speaks" to each one of us personally, letting his eyes rest in ours for an appropriate span of seconds.
Two of the musicians have with them a good experience from the English folk scene. Chris Parkinson's name can also be found on CD's with Waterson/Carthy and Norma Waterson. Maartin Alcock has played with Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull. Besides being a wizard on the strings, he is the top joker of the band. Young Joe Wright plays his strings brilliantly and, as far as I could hear, also has a fine voice.
